Allegorical mourning scene grouped around a monument to Alexander Hamilton. At center is a pedestal topped by an urn with a medallion portrait of Hamilton. At center right, a female figure in battle dress mourns, a shield and sword at her feet. At far left, figure of death holds a double tablet for the Ten Commandments, pointing to the number VI, Thou Shalt Not Kill. A woman holding a baby at left may represent the widow. Three cannonballs at center foreground and crossed pistols on the pedestal suggest the violent cause of Hamilton's death.
