British anti-recruiting satire; the calamities faced by a British soldier sent to fight in the American colonies are contrasted with the good life of the English worker; a thin soldier surrounded by his wife and children in ragged clothes, faces obstacles including American soldiers with "Death or liberty" on their hats firing at him; also including images of sedan chair carrier (chair man), chimney sweep, coachman, & "Famine." Text at bottom: on the left: "3 shillings a day, 2 shillings a day, 1 shilling a day" (indicating the wages respectively of the chairman, the coachman, and the sweep); on the right: "Yankees. Fire and water. Sword and famine"; below: "This sketch displays the hardships a soldier and his family endure on the bare subsistence of six-pence a day, while the lowest trades earn sufficient to enjoy the comforts of life."
