Note
Full-length, standing in uniform, in front of a cannon and American flag, symbolic of his position as the Continental army's chief of artillery, his left hand resting on a map on top of a wooden support.
Below the title it states, "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession on the publisher." The portrait is based on J.F.E. Prud'homme engraving after Gilbert Stuart. However, Chappel made Knox more youthful, closer to how he would have looked at the end of the Revolutionary War.
The original engraving was produced as an illustration in Schroeder, Life & times of Washington, Vol. 1, between pages 548 and 549. That copy carries the names of Chappel and Phillibrown below the engraving, is titled as "Major General Henry Knox" and is copyrighted 1857. All five of these copies come from Duyckinck, National portrait gallery, Vol. 1, page 288.
Five duplicate copies. One has accession number 87.73. Another has accession number L1994.96 and is a gift from Walter F. Rucker, member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of Virginia, May 1994. Another copy is from the Thomas Collection.
The Rucker gift copy was displayed at Anderson House in the exhibit: Massachusetts in the American Revolution "Let it begin here.", 1997-1998.
