Half-figure, seated to the right. Wearing an overcoat. Draped background. Below the title is a facsimilie signature. Centered below the rectangle, between the names of the artists and engraver, it reads: "for the Trumbull Gallery, Yale College, New Haven." There are four copies of this engraving Two copies are pages from Herring and Longacre, The national portrait gallery of distinguished Americans, Vol. I. These copies carry the copyright and no border around the engraving. One copy is from the library's Thomas Collection and the second is from the Bryce Metcalf Collection. The small difference in page size probably arises from different printings of the book. One copy has no plate markings and the copyright information has been removed. There is a single line border 2/16 around the rectangle with the names of the artists and engraver and the reference to Yale inside the border. This copy is designated by the library as being from Schuyler and is part of the Thomas Collection. One copy, on a much smaller sheet, has no plate markings, has the copyright removed, and has no border. John Trumbull was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of Connecticut. 4 copies.
