Rare copy of Charles Willson Peale's oval mezzotint portrait of Lafayette, based on his own painting of Lafayette in 1780 at General Washington's request. It is part of planned series of mezzotints of "Illustrious personages" Peale undertook in 1787; he only completed portraits of Benjamin Franklin, Lafayette, the Reverend Joseph Pilmore and George Washington. The Lafayette, the second of the series, was completed by April 20, 1787.
