Note
A pastoral, early morning scene of Capitol Hill and the Capitol buiding as it appeared in 1844. The Capitol had been painted white to cover evidence of the burning during the War of 1812 and shows the original rotunda and the newly cleared grounds around the building to form an expansive terrace. The scene is thought to be a faithful rendition of Capitol Hill prior to the Civil War. Below the title on the left is a description of painting and to the right, a biography of printer, William MacLeod, who became the first curator of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1874..
This is a reproduction of an original painting in the collection of Government Services Savings & Loan, Bethesda, Md. in 1973. That bank has since been acquired by Chevy Chase Bank.
