Note
Bust, in profile, to the left, in uniform with queue.. On his left lapel hang the Ordre of St. Louis and the Eagle of the Soceity of the Cincinnati. Aquatint. Quenedey Type. Circular with artist and engraver names appearing outside below the border. Under the title it reads: "Sa belle conduite au siege de York-Town, en Virginie, le fit elire en 1787 membre de l'Assemblee des notables et en 1789 depute a l'Assemblee Nationale."
This portrait is similar to a number of contemporary portraits of Lafayette when he was Commander of the National Guard during the French Revolution.

Lafayette was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from France. Inscribed on cardboard inside frame (now removed) "Gift of Col. G. Creighton Webb, Nov. 14, 1939."
