Description

The battle rages and in the center a British soldier prepares to kill De Kalb as one of his officers pleads for his life. Below the title appears: "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers." This engraving was probably produced for Dawson, Battle of the United States by Sea and Land, Vol. I, since it was copyrighted in 1857. A similar engraving appears in Spencer's, History ot the United States, Vol 2, between pages 80 and 81. "Painted by Alonzo Chappel" replaces "From an original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers" and the copyright is 1868. Black-and-white photograph and negative in case file. The matted copy of this engraving was displayed at Anderson House in the exhibit, "Delaware in the American revolution," October 12, 2002 through May 3, 2003.
