Full length, standing, facing front, in uniform. Holds a cocked hat in this right hand which rest on his hip, and the left hand rests on the barrel of a cannon. A soldier stands with his horse in the background, surrounded by battlefield banners.

The original copy of this painting of George Washington was commissioned by the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania for the Council Chamber. Peale traveled to the Princeton and Trenton battlefields in 1779 to sketch for the portrait. The original, which now is displayed by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, was so successful that Peale completed multiple copies. This copy, owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York was thought to have been commissioned by Mrs. Washington and is the only copy that shows the battlefield at Trenton. All other copies, depict the Battle of Princeton.
