Concerns the presidential election of 1844: "...[T]he whole supply from the quiver of our unscrupulous opponents falls harmless at my feet .... I sometimes think Polk will get as many or more votes than Clay."
In return for Bancroft's support, Polk appointed him first Secretary ofthe Navy and later ambassador to England.
Bancroft was defeated in the Massachusetts gubernatorial race that year.
Letter also mentions Col [Franklin] Pierce, a successor member of the Society of the Cincinnati.
