To the left of the signature is a miniature engraving of his boyhood home. Below the lithograph, to the right is the name of the publisher and the copyright date.
This photolithograph is taken from a Landsdowne portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart.
The Gravure Company of America published "The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents" in 1901, containing portraits and text for 25 presidents. The portraits of individual presidents appear to have been sold separetely. The library has the pages for James Monroe (P&E L1993.714) and Franklin Pierce (P&E L1993.718). In the case of these two, the portrait is accompanied by the page of text with a commentary on significant acts and policies that have been attributed to the presidental term. In the case of the Washington portrait, only the portrait is available. The sheet of text seems to be missing.
